USAID Celebrates International Women’s Day

On March 8, 2020, people around the world celebrated International Women’s Day as a day to celebrate the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women everywhere. While there is so much room to grow, there is also so much to celebrate. As far as USAID is concerned, there are many reasons to celebrate this year, and here are just a few…

In January of this year, we celebrated the first anniversary of the signing of the Women’s Entrepreneurship and Economic Empowerment (WEEE) Act. This Act signed by the President, provides funding and support to women-led projects and initiatives, and it also helps promote equality in positions across the boards within the organization.

In March of this year, we celebrated Women’s Global Development and Prosperity, a program designed to help promote and advance female leaders in every form of government and in economies around the world. So far, more than nine million women globally have benefited from these new resources.

The Policy on Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse is the third initiative celebrated this year. The goal of this policy is to promote the safety and livelihood, both at home and at work, of women and children around the world. Taking measures like this is important because it promotes the ideals that we have as Americans and as people of the world and it is critical that our voices are heard.

These are just three examples of government-sponsored policies that help protect and celebrate the lives of women in Ethiopia and around the world. There is so much to celebrate for International Women’s Day and every day. Please join me in celebrating!
